Squint Surgery

Squint Surgery

Strabismus or Cross-eyes or Squint is a condition in which both the eyes of a patient are not aligned properly. There can be causes of squint which can range from hereditary to squints caused due to accidents. Patients who have squint are characterized by specific noticeable symptoms. These are

  1. The eyes appear misaligned
  2. Both eyes do not move together
  3. Excessive and frequent blinking of eyes in sunlight etc.
  4. Double vision
  5. Poor and faulty depth perception through eyes.
  6. Vision in one or both eyes is poor

A suspected case of squint is medically examined by ophthalmologist before concluding if the patient has squint. Patients who have squint can also be directly identified through eyes which do not appear straight. Also such patients experience high rate of blinking in sunlight. It is very important to properly diagnose squint and take corrective measures.

Squint treatment has higher success rate with early detection. Children between the age of 6 months to 5 years should be regularly monitored to rule out any occurrence of squint.

There are two approaches for treatment of squint in India. They can be broadly categorized into surgical and non-surgical.

Squint surgery typically involves the weakening of the strong muscle of the eyes due to which the eyes are misaligned and not in proper state. At the same time the weak muscles are strengthened so that the eyes can maintain the correct position post surgery. Typically around more than 50% of squint patients can be treated through squint surgery. The type of squint surgery that is prescribed to the patients depends upon the type and scale of squint. Sometimes post squint surgery patients are also required to wear spectacles to have a clear vision and maintain correct alignment. Squint surgery requires only 1 day of stay in hospital post which the patient is discharged but the eyes are covered with cloth so that proper healing can take place.

Non surgical squint treatment is referred for patients whose vision and eyes can be aligned through use of spectacles or simple eye drops. Again the type of approach to be taken depends upon the level and scale of squint in patient.
